The top price at Talkook Border Leicesters was reached three times during their on property sale near Crookwell on Thursday.

All three top-priced rams were by Talkook Rocket 210002, which was sired by Talkook Rocky 81/2017 who was champion ram at Sydney Royal in 2019 and the supreme Border Leicester exhibit at the 2019 NSW sheep and wool show in Dubbo.

Repeat buyer Les Sutherland, Edolston Border Leicester stud, Bogan Gate, purchased two of the top rams for $2100.

The first was Talkook 230033, sired by Talkook Rocket 210002 and out of Talkook 210121.

The ram, 98 kilograms, was 31.9 micron and had scans of 26.78 square centimetres for eye muscle area and a fat depth of 5.5 millimetres.

The second ram purchased by Mr Sutherland for the equal top price was Talkook 230014, sired by Talkook Rocket 210002 and out of Talkook 210306.

The ram, 100kg, was 34.6 micron and scanned an EMA of 24.26sq cm and a fat depth of 5mm.

Mr Sutherland said the Talkook rams had always grown well out at Bogan Gate and were good Border Leicester types.

He said he had been breeding Border Leicesters since he was 15-years-old and had moved the stud from Koorawatha to Bogan Gate when OJD was presenting in NSW.

Mr Sutherland said he joined 120 ewes this year and were breeding mostly for clients looking to breed first-cross ewes.

The third ram to reach $2100 was Talkook 230017 which sold to repeat buyers James and Tom McCormack, Red Hill, Crookwell.

The ram, 101kg, was 32.4 micron and scanned an EMA of 23.72sq cm and 5.5mm for fat.

He was another ram by Talkook Rocket 210002 and out of Talkook 210017.

The McCormacks run 1500 Merino ewes in their cross-bred prime lamb operation.

Scott Anderson, Talkook, said the four specially selected rams, which included the three sale toppers, had been selected at the start of the year for their overall size, weight and wool quality.

“They have been in and out of the show team and all have different traits for the breed,” he said.

Mr Anderson said he was happy with the sale result and said it was “consistent with where the breed is at at the moment”.

All four specially selected rams sold to a top of $2100 thrice and for an average of $2075.

Overall 17 of 44 rams sold for an average of $1205.

The sale was conducted by MD and JJ Anderson and AWN with Greg Anderson as auctioneer.
